The Front Door Debate!! Time to Weigh In!!

Ok...here is our front door:

The Great Debate

Pretty right? I think so. It'll look even better black! We are both super happy the center is blurred so you can't see in the house. PLUS!! However...my hubby doesn't like that the side windows aren't the same way. Here is where there are differences of opinion on how to fix that. Which do you think is best? Do you have another option?

1. Storm door ~ Putting a storm door up will both protect the door and make it harder to see through the second panes of glass on the actual door. More expensive but also protects the door.

2. Putting the sticky laminate window film over the entire glass that smokes it all out. Much less expensive.

Which option would you choose? Which option do you think works best? Do you have another option?

PS: please see other post for updated pics on the house.

  1. I would go with the storm door. Total personal preference here, but I grew up with a front door similar to yours and I despised it. Even with the film, you can still see shadows. What if you want to see who is at the door, but not let them know that you're home? That was always my thought.

  2. I love the idea of a storm door. I plan to put one up on my house, but my door only has the tiny window on top.

  3. Did you ever think of doing a faux stained glass film over the exposed glass? I love stained glass but its so expensive. Luckly my sister teaches a stained glass class so she often sends me amazing pieces! But there is a window film you can add that does the same. Heres a website for some: http://windowfilmworld.com/stained-glass-window-film.htm

Also you could always do a sheer curtain of some sort.

  5. Beautiful door! I agree with the storm door option. Hey what about getting sheers to cover the space.

  6. I like Minaq2's suggestion about the sheers. If the door has metal in it, you could use magnetic mount rods above and below the window.

  7. I would do the window tint that that you can see clearly out but you can'tsee in. I have a guy that does that and it looks good. From the outside it just looks like a shiny window.

  8. Noob beat me to it...I forget where I saw this done...guessing on HGTV but it seemed very easy and looked real nice. I would also put a storm door on. It will help protect your really nice door from the elements and will give you some additional level of security as well. As nice as that door looks I think I would much rather have a solid door with windows down the side. So now that I have played both sides of the fence you can stop the debate and do both.

  10. I would go for the storm door as I plan to do the same with my front door. That door is beautiful and I would consider getting a tinted window so you can see out and they cannot see in. Good way to do that whn you are answering the door. Your door is HOT! Haha

  11. UPDATE: 9-18-2011

We found a film to put on it. Almost a mirrored look for privacy, but not totally un-see-through. So we also got a black storm door. The film is on...the door is not. But we hope to have it on by spring. =)
